Creative Writing Class in March 2020 open for registration now

We will soon be welcoming Spring and that means I will be teaching my Creative Writing Class at Tri-County Community College. If your writing has just gone stale and you can't seem to make yourself sit down and put words on paper, take this class. If you are a new writer and need some help from friendly folks, just like you, and a teacher who remembers what it was like in the beginning, register for this class. 

We will meet on Monday evenings, March 9 - March 30 at 6 - 8 PM on the campus of TCCC.

Title: Write Your Life Stories for Your Family or for Publishing

Location: Tri-County Community College, in Murphy, NC.
The dates:Tuesday afternoons, 6 - 8 p.m. March 24, 31 and April 7 and 14. 

I have taught adults to write stories about their lives for a number of years. The stories are often written for grandchildren or other family because the writer wants to leave a legacy of what life was like before cell phones, before computers and video games, before families were too busy and before they were scattered all over the country and around the world. The writer might want to tell about his family history for generations before him. 

Each of us has a unique story, and in this class the student will learn

• where to begin
• how to begin
• how to organize your work
• what to write and what not to write
• how to write so that your audience will want to read your stories

Each student will have several stories completed and written by the end of the course in an entertaining and interesting form. Each student will carry home a number of tools he/she can use in the future. If you have studied  with me in the past, you will not be bored. We will have new exercises and new topics to explore.

We Had a Great Everything but Poetry Class

We had a great four weeks of writing with five students at Writers Circle, but it ended today. Thanks Staci, Laura, Paula, Mike and Gene for all of your participation and contributions, as well as your comments.

This group included published and yet to be published students, but each gained from the participation of others. I appreciate all of you for your commitment. 

I am sure we will see you again at another class at Writers Circle or maybe at my next class at Tri-County Community College in March. Continue to watch our Schedule Page as we set up the calendar for 2013.

Today we reviewed what we covered in the sessions and added publishing as the last subject. I suggest that writers begin by first writing short -- short fiction, personal essays, and articles before jumping headlong into a novel. In a short piece it is easier to focus on the story. 

By publishing short fiction, personal essays or articles, the author begins to build a platform which will likely help her to catch the attention of an agent or publisher when she completes her book.

I also recommend that my students subscribe to at least one writing publication. Beginning writers can find excellent articles on the craft of writing in Writers' Digest and the Writer Magazine. Poets and Writers is more helpful, I believe, to more experienced writers who want to read about accomplished writers and who are interested in the pages of Classifieds at the back of the magazine. 

Thursday, December 1, will be the final class for the present Creative Writing course.
We will hold a two hour class 10:00a.m.  - 12:00 on non-fiction, memoir writing, and from noon until 2:00 p.m. we will discuss publishing - all kinds - all ways - and the pitfalls to be aware of in self publishing.

Writers Circle will not hold classes again until next spring.
